2 CHRONICLES 24

22 Thus Joash the king [Yoash HaMelech] remembered not the kindness [chesed] which Jehoiada his father [Yehoyada Aviv] had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it [He call to account].

WHEN Jehoiada died, Joash forsook Yahweh to serve groves and idols. Rejecting his mentor, he instigated the death of Zechariah, Jehoiada's son, having him stoned between the temple and the altar. It was a tragic fall from a promising start, but Joash suffered the fate of his own apostasy, as invasion decimated his kingdom and conspiracy took his life.

This disgraceful murder in the temple courts, however, proved that no one was immune from royal vengeance, and it began an epoch of spiritual turbulence which more than once would interrupt the worship of the house of God.

In such uncertain times, the House of Asaph withdrew, but continued to preserve their family songs as an imperative duty.
