EZEKIEL 38

Note : Bro Thomas [Correctly I believe identified Togarmah to be the circassian tribes - Georgia,

1 And the word of Yahweh came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog [Gog can be identified once he becomes autocrat of Germany as well as Russia and the King of the North once established at Constantinople [Dan 11: 40], [the prince of Rosh - RV] of Meshech and Tubal [tobolsk/tobol river (interior Russia)] , and prophesy against him,

The Gogue of Ezekiel and John—The Near Future—

The Prince of the Russians is to be the Gog of the Land of the Magog. These are the descendants of Noah's grandson in the line of Japheth.

The settlements of the Magog extended to the Baltic; and are known in history as the Scythians, Mongols, Tartars, Sarmatians, Germans, Scandinavians, and so forth. Hence, the title bestowed by Ezekiel upon the confederacy of the latter days, clearly imports that the Prince of the Russias is to become Imperial Chief of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and so forth.

"He shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the land of delights, and many countries shall be overthrown"—Dan. 11:40, 41.

The Russian Autocracy, then, in the fulness of its dominion being Ezekiel's Gog, the next thing to inquire is, will the power display itself as Ezekiel predicts, before or after the manifestation of Yahweh in power and great glory? In answer to this we remark, that Ezekiel evidently declares,

1. That a gathering out of many peoples will be in prosperous occupation of the land of Israel; and that of this gathering many will be Israelites—38:8, 14, 16.

2. That this colony does not overspread the whole country; but is limited to "the midst of the land"—verse 12; Isai. 6:12, 13.

3. That the prosperity of this central colony becomes a bait, tempting Leviathan to bite; in consequence of which Yahweh's hook enters his jaws—verses 10–12; Isai. 27:1.

4. That Gog invades the land, and because actually there, the Lion-Power of Tarshish makes war upon him—verse 13.

5. That the invasion of the land by Gog is the exciting cause of the outbreak of Adonai Yahweh's fury—verse 18.

6. That after Adonai Yahweh's fury is thus aroused, his presence is manifested upon the land, accompanied with a great earthquake therein, and a panic seizure of all the men, inhabitants and combatants engaged—verses 19, 20.

7. That after Adonai Yahweh's presence has evened, "a sword" is developed against Gog, "throughout all Yahweh's mountains;" and with which He pleads against Gog, in the eyes of the many nations fighting under his banner against the Lion-Power of Tarshish—verses 21–23.

8. That the sword with which Adonai Yahweh, or Jesus Christ, pleads against Gog, causes his power to be broken upon the mountains of Israel—ch. 39:1–5.

9. That the war is then transferred from Canaan to Europe, indicated by the terms "Magog" and "the Isles"—verse 6.

10. That these events being consummated, Israel no more pollutes the holy name; and "the Day" proclaimed in the Gospel of the Kingdom, and styled by Paul "the Day of the Christ, is introduced—verses 7, 8; the Day of Adonai Yahweh's glorification—verse 13.

11. That from the time of the great sacrifice of Gog upon the mountains of Israel by the Sword of Judgment called for by Adonai Yahweh; when this is eaten; when the vengeance is executed upon the invader; then will begin the work of bringing again the captivity of Jacob, and the bestowal of mercy upon the whole house of Israel—verses 17–25; and lastly,

12. That Adonai Yahweh will then pour out the spirit upon the twelve tribes—verse 29.

Such is the order of events, to our mind plainly predicted by the prophet. Being satisfied of the correctness of this analysis of the two chapters, we affirm, with full assurance of faith, that the Russian Power will certainly enact the grandly prominent part assigned it before the advent of the Messiah in power and great glory.

We may remark here, in passing, that "the sword" "called for throughout the mountains of Israel," 'is that "two-edged sword" David speaks of in the hands of the Saints;" with which they are

"to execute vengeance upon the nations, and punishments upon the peoples; to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints"—Ps. 149.

Gog

1. Gogue I. was a foreigner; Gogue II. will be one likewise, belonging to the Ros, and not to the Germans;

2. Gogue I. became sovereign in fact, though not de jure [from the law or by right]; Gogue II. will become sovereign in fact by conquest;

3. Gogue I. became ruler in a time of confusion, because the native princes could not maintain order; weakness of the sovereigns, and anarchy of the people, will precede the de facto sovereignty of Gogue II. also;

4. Gogue I., though exalted to the highest post of honour and power, short only of the legitimate sovereignty, was precipitated from his high estate by a violent death. This is also the destiny of the prophetic Gogue, who is to "come to his end, and no one shall help him." [Dan. 11:45]

1. Gogue, or the prince of Ros, is king of Meschech and Tubal, therefore he is king of the north geographically; those countries being north of the Holy Land, which, according to the covenant, extends to Amanus and the Euphrates;

2. Gogue is to invade the land of Israel "from the north parts" [Ezek. 38:15 (see vs. 6)] and "in the latter days;" [Ezek. 38:16] and the king of the north is to enter into the same country at the same time; therefore, as they come against the same enemy and at the same time, they must be one and the same power;

3. The Libyans and Ethiopians belong to Gogue's army; and Daniel testifies, that "the Libyans and Ethiopians are at the steps of the king of the north," [Dan. 11:43] that is, they march among his troops;

4. Hostile tidings come to Gogue from Sheba and Dedan eastward; and from "the Merchants of Tarshish and the young lions thereof" [Ezek. 38:13] northward; so also, "tidings out of the east and out of the north," says Daniel, "shall trouble the king of the north;" [Dan. 11:44]

5. Gogue is to "fall upon the mountains of Israel," [Ezek.39:4] where he and his multitudes are to be buried; so the king of the north having encamped "between the seas in the glorious holy mountain," the hill-country, "comes to his end" there, with "none to help him:" [Dan. 11:45] and,

6. Gogue unexpectedly encounters the Lord God in battle on the mountains of Israel, and the king of the north contends with Michael the great prince, who standeth up for Israel, and delivers them: they are both defeated and deprived of dominion by the same supernatural power.

The power styled‭ "‬God‭" ‬by Ezekiel is to be mishmar,‭ ‬or protector of bodies politic occupying certain countries indicated by the terms Magog,‭ ‬Rosh,‭ ‬Meshech,‭ ‬Tubal,‭ ‬Gomer,‭ ‬Persia,‭ ‬Cush,‭ ‬Libya,‭ ‬and Togarmah.‭ ‬These names indicate peoples of the east,‭ ‬south,‭ ‬north,‭ ‬north-west,‭ ‬and west of Palestine.‭ ‬Gog is to be a guard or protector of these,‭ ‬and to‭ ‬lead them up to battle against Jerusalem,‭ ‬that they may be punished there for their enormous iniquity at the hand of Israel's king.‭

‬Now,‭ ‬it must be evident to the merest tyro,‭ ‬that‭ ‬before Gog can lead these peoples against the Holy City he must establish his protectorate over the west.

"Gog"

- The English and Hebrew Bible Student's Concordance gives the meaning of this name as "a roof," and that of Haman-gog as "the multitude on the roof." This is interesting in view of the destruction of the Philistines "on the roof" when Samson, with renewed strength, overthrew it.

Samson typed Israel, on behalf of whom Gog's host will be destroyed. In Numbers 24:7

Balaam predicted that the future king of Israel

"shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted."

But in the Septuagint, Agag is rendered as "Gog." Accepting that reading reading, Balaam prophetically saw the destruction of Gog at the hands of Christ, and the exaltation of the

Kingdom of God over that of Edom, or of the flesh. This coming triumph of Israel over Edom was foreshadowed by the victory of Israel over Amalek recorded in Exodus 17:8-16.

Amalek was a descendant of Esau (Gen. 36:1, 16), and therefore representative of the

flesh in political manifestation. According to Josephus, the army comprised a confederacy of various tribes (or nations) antagonistic to Israel, among whom Amalek was accounted as "the first of the nations" (Num. 24:20), and over which ruled Agag, or Gog.

Moses' victory at that time was a victory of faith over flesh, of prayer over fleshly power. He saw it as a foreshadowing of the victory to come, and therefore built an altar (representative of Christ-Heb. 13:10) and called it Yahweh-nissi, a title that points to the Lord Jesus in glory as providing the means of personal and national victory (Isa. 11:10-12).

The anti-semitic Haman (described as the "Jews' enemy"-Est.3:10; 7:6; 8:1; 9:10,24) was an "Agagite" (Esther 3:1) and therefore a descendant of the Amalekite kings (Num. 24:7; 1 Sam. 15:8).

He is called an Amalekite by Josephus. In the typology of the book of Esther, he represents sinful flesh which can be manifested in various ways. The Gogian host of the future will be representative of the flesh in political manifestation, and as such is doomed to destruction.

If the definition of the meaning of the name given above is accepted, Gog is a title representative of "the one at the top."

The Christadelphian Expositor, logos. org. au

The Magogae are identified by Josephus with the Scythians, who, according to Herodotus,

"spread from the River Tanais or Don westward along the banks of the Ister, or Danube,"

through the area later known as Hungary, Transylvania, and Wallachia. Dion Cassius, who lived 150 years after Josephus, relates how that Pompey, in his return into Europe from Asia,

"determined to pass to the Ister, or Danube, through the Scythae; and so to enter Italy."

Diodorus Siculus, who lived about a century before Josephus, traces the Scythians (or Magogites) much further into Europe than the Danube; even to the shores of the Baltic.

The land of Magog, therefore, comprises central Europe including Germany, but extending to the Baltic. According to the terms of this prophecy, Gog must dominate in that area. This can only be by conquest or agreement because Gog's title is not Prince of Magog, but Prince of Ros. Gog is three times given this title (v. 3; Ch. 39:1), but only once said to be "of the land of Magog."

Later, the punishment on Magog is shown as being independent of that poured out on Gog's forces (Ch. 39:6), showing the two to be different.

The Christadelphian Expositor, logos. org. au

Gog was the the ancient name for a mighty leader of the Scythians [Heb. Magogites] There is some Germanic overtone here. And Gomer and all his bands. France and Germany cooperating militarily. For 150 years Christadelphians have been expounding bible prophecy and the wonderful thing is we don't see any need to change the terms of that prophetical content.

But concerning the invading army notice there's not one single Arab people. The army of Gog - the people of the beast power that come into the land at the time of the end are all Japathites, with the exception of Libya and Ethiopia who are Hamites.

We, I believe, have been privileged to see that dramatic revival of the beast system that tells us that the final denoument of Ezekiel 38 is probably very close at hand.

What might we expect to see in matters European?

I think the first thing is I think we expect to see the future dominance of Magog because although Gomer and other Japathite nations are associated with the Gogian confederacy Ezekiel 38 verses five and six tell us Germany is at the center of it. Gog is deeply associated with the land and the people of Magog verse two. After the defeat of Gog in israel the judgments of God are turned upon Magog - Ezk 39: 6

And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am Yahweh

It's as if that's the center of where this controversy has come from and in fact in the final rebellion at the end of the kingdom age we're told that the post-millennial revolt of the nations is described as a further assembling of Magog the center of rebellion in pre-millennial times and that's the type of the last revolt. So I think our expectation is to anticipate a continued increase in Magog's influence in europe until it becomes the dominant force within the European Union.

Since the time of the unification of Germany that's exactly what's taking place. Step by step the real power in that Franco German friendship treaty is being driven by Germany and I think that's exactly in line with our prophetic expectations. The increasing dominance of Magog until it becomes the driving force behind the European Union

I think we expect to see the increasing influence of roman Catholicism in Germany. Greater progress towards roman catholic and lutheran reconciliation. We expect to see the increasing economic prosperity of the European Union that will establish a strong global position. We expect to see the increasing momentum of the European Union towards establishing a separate political entity distinct from the individual nations that it represents.

Lastly we expect to see the increasing likelihood of the member states to seek the militarization of the European Union rather than the development of their national forces.

When the lord comes we ought to be still debating who the beast is it wouldn't be appropriate would it for the saints to still be saying well where's the beast Lord that we might fight it with thee.

We ought to know, to be alive to the signs of the times and our lives ought to be comported on the basis that our lord's coming is near and sure and that when he comes we shall not only be ready to be with him and to fight with him for the establishment of the kingdom, but to have thrilled to those signs that we've been privileged to see in our own lifetime.

To know that that prophetic word that God has given is so certain and so sure.

3 And say, Thus saith Adonia Yahweh; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

Son of man, set thy face against an Autocracy, against the land of Magog, or Scythia, against a prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Thubol, or the Czar of all the Russias, and prophesy against him, and say, Thus saith the Lord Yahweh, Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the Scytho-Autocratic Power, administered by the Prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Thubol, and I, even I, will repulse thee.

That the Gogue-Power is Russo-European, that is, an imperiality constituted of the Russian, Scandinavian, Teutonic, and Latin nations of Continental Europe; the dominant element of which being north in relation to Palestine, is therefore "the King of the North" of Daniel's prophecy of the latter days.

Herald of the Kingdom and Age to Come, Dec 1858

Gog becomes the Mouth of the dragon when he becomes the autocrat of Constantinople. Russia not yet the mouth of the dragon power.

Vladimir!

Gog yet to become the Mouth of the dragon..Govern Constantinople and issue from that throne political and ecclesiastical influence - "unclean spirit".

We did see democracy in Russia under Gorbachev! Has that spirit gone forth and prepared the nations for armageddon?

4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

...Concerning Gog's forces, Ezekiel says, "all of them equipped with all sorts, bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords"—"bows, arrows, and handshooters." "These were the weapons of Ezekiel's time. The Spirit by whom he spoke told him nothing about cannon; but included them in the phrase "all sorts." They are not excluded because omitted; there were simply no words in Hebrew to express them;

The turning back is affirmed of Gog as the Assyrian invader of the Holy Land in the Latter Days. It is the Gog of Gomer and of Persia, Lybia, and Khush who is to be turned back. The Czar of Rosh, Meshech, and Thubol, has not yet attained to that position in the prophecy. When he becomes the Gog of Gomer, Persia, &c.,

"an evil thought will come into his mind, and he will say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages, &c."

His purpose will be to bring the whole country into permanent subjection to his dominion, according to the old policy of his predecessors the kings of Assyria, Egypt, and Babylon. But as in their case so it will be in his. Their purpose was defeated. The army of Sennacherib was overwhelmed, the great dragon of Egypt was hooked into the wilderness and there destroyed, and the power of Babylon was broken by the Heir.

The language applied to the first and second is similar, and illustrative of that applied to Gog. "Because," said Yahweh,

"thy rage against me and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest."

This is said in Isaiah of Sennacherib, whose power, after having passed through the dynasties of the golden, silver, brazen, and iron parts of the Assyrian Image, comes in those latter days to concentrate itself in the clay. The power is one, while the dynasties that have administered it have been several. In Isaiah 27., the power is styled

"Leviathan the piercing serpent, even Leviathan that crooked serpent; the dragon that is in the sea"-"the King over all the children of pride."

This Leviathan is the Dragon of the Apocalypse, ch. 20:2, and styled there, "the old serpent which is Devil and Satan," and which, John says, the Messenger who descends from heaven, εχρατησε, ekratese, subdues or vanquishes; that is, to use the word in Ezekiel, repulses, or "turns back," as it is rendered in the Common Version.

Herald of the Kingdom and Age to Come, March 1855

5 Persia, Ethiopia [Cush - RV], and Libya [Put - RV] with them; all of them with shield and helmet:

Not only is the rebirth of Israel a guarantee of the fulfillment of this next step, but we actually see Gog himself devoting all his resources to building the greatest military and naval power the world has ever known, and openly and avowedly dedicated to bringing the earth under his system.

And even further: his enmity is specifically and especially directed toward that one little land: that little Mordecai who dares oppose him. And with him in enmity stand the red-handed papal power, and Libya and Ethiopia and Assyria, just as prophecy requires. When a recent Pope visited the Middle East, he fawned effusively on the Arabs who want to destroy Israel, but he walked gingerly around the borders of Israel as if he were walking around a deep black hole.

Bro Growcott - Prophecies in the captivity

8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

There is, then, a partial and primary restoration of Jews before the manifestation, which is to serve as the nucleus, or basis, of future operations in the restoration of the rest of the tribes after he has appeared in the kingdom.

The pre-adventual colonization of Palestine will be on purely political principles; and the Jewish colonists will return in unbelief of the Messiaship of Jesus, and of the truth as it is in him.

They will emigrate thither as agriculturists and traders, in the hope of ultimately establishing their commonwealth, but more immediately of getting rich in silver and gold by commerce with India, and in cattle and goods by their industry at home under the efficient protection of the British power.

And this their expectation will not be deceived; for, before Gogue invades their country, it is described by the prophet, as

"a land of unwalled villages, whose inhabitants are at rest, and dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates; and possessed of silver and gold, cattle and goods, dwelling in the midst of the land" (Ezek. 38:11,12,13).

Now any person acquainted with the present insecure condition of Palestine under the Ottoman dominion must be satisfied from the testimony, that some other power friendly to Israel must then have become paramount over the land, which is able to guarantee protection to them, and to put the surrounding, tribes in fear.

This is all that is needed, namely, security for life, and property and Palestine would be as eligible for Jewish emigration as the United States have proved for the Gentiles.

... I know not whether the men, who at present contrive the foreign policy of Britain, entertain the idea of assuming the sovereignty of the Holy Land, and of promoting its colonization by the Jews; their present intentions, however, are of no importance one way or the other; because they will be compelled, by events soon to happen, to do what, under existing circumstances, heaven and earth combined could not move them to attempt.

The present decisions of "statesmen" are destitute of stability. A shooting star in the political, firmament is sufficient to disturb all the forces of their system; and to stultify all the theories of their political astronomy. The finger of God has indicated a course to be pursued by Britain which cannot be evaded, and which her counsellors will not only be willing, but eager, to adopt when the crisis comes upon them.

The decree has long since gone forth which calls upon the Lion of Tarshish to protect the Jews. Upwards of a thousand years before the British were a nation, the prophet addresses them as the power which at "evening-tide" should interest themselves in behalf of Israel.

Elpis Israel 3.6.

9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

'And he shall pass through Judah [swirl into Yehudah]; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of Thy land [eretz], O [Immanu-El]' (Isa 8:8).

The Assyrian was a military, plundering desolator, who boasted of his plundering (Isa. 10:13-14). In more recent times the overflowing Euphrates stood for another plundering desolator, the once-fearsome Turk now dried up and impotent, according to the infallible divine fiat.

Isaiah plainly told Ahaz what his newly-bought "friend" would do: overflow Judah "even to the neck," and "fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel." This he did in Ahaz's son Hezekiah's day, up to the neck, but the head was saved by the miraculous destruction of the Assyrian army. This was typical of the victory of Messiah's day, when the latter-day Assyrian would again overflow the land even to the neck.

Bro Growcott - Prince of Peace

10 Thus saith Adonai Yahweh; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:

An evil thought

The king of Babylon under the name of Lucifer, as the type of its last ruler in the latter days, is represented in Isaiah 14:13, 14, as threatening to place himself above all earthly rule, with Zion for the throne of his dominion, saying in his heart,

"I will ascend into the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit also upon the Mount of the Congregation on the sides of the north. I will ascend above the height of the clouds."

This ascending of the Assyrian "into the heavens" implies some particular heavens in which he is not previously to his ascent; and that it is the Assyrian of the Latter Days is clear from the testimony that Yahweh says,

"I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off Israel, and his burden depart from off their shoulders."

This has never happened yet to the Assyro-Babylonian power, and must therefore be in the future. This saying of Lucifer in his heart is no other than "the evil thought" which is to come into the mind of Gog, impelling him to the invasion of the Holy Land, and the siege of Jerusalem, which will be taken.

He is now beyond the limits of the Roman earth, and consequently not in its heavens, which are the heavens of Daniel's Fourth Beast. But he says,

"I will ascend into them, and above the height of the clouds,"

or powers of those heavens; that is, he will become the Imperial Chief of the Four-Beast dominion, and exalt himself above Israel, with Zion for his throne.

Herald of the Kingdom and Age to Come, April 1855

11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

If the question be asked, Why should Russia invade Palestine? the answer is, It is a necessary step to her acquisition of an empire in the East, by which alone she can hope successfully to antagonize England, and found that universal domain to which she aspires.

...As auxiliary to the same line of argument, the lecturer adverted to the conviction on the mind of the Russian sovereign and people, that they had a "sacred mission" to fulfil in saving Europe from the whirlpool of democratic anarchy and confusion, by the conquest of Turkey, and the capacity thence derived, to govern the world in harmony with Russian ideas of liberty.

The Czar, as the head of the Greek Church, is impelled, too, by certain motives of superstition and of real or supposed state necessity, to fix his capitol in the city of the Czars or Cæsars. He deems himself entitled by hereditary right to succeed to the sceptre of the Cæsars, and a war with Turkey at this day would be regarded by his subjects and by the ten millions of Greeks out of the fourteen millions which form the entire population of Turkey in Europe, as a holy war-a crusade of Christians against infidels, for the recovery of the holy sepulchre and of the ancient rites and institutions of the primitive church.

...Its present condition is significantly expressed by the Scripture symbolography as "the drying up of the great river Euphrates"-the country watered by the Euphrates being the original seat of the Turkish people. This drying up or extinction of the Turkish empire is declared expressly to be "that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared." Rev. 16:12. For centuries past, "westward the star of empire takes its way." But the scene is to be reversed. The original seats of civilization, science, and the arts, are to be restored.

As the "wise men from the east" came to herald the birth of the Messiah at his first advent, so, at his second appearing, it is "the kings of the east"-"The kings from the rising of the sun," as it is better translated-who are to greet the coming of the King of kings and Lord of lords; and with loud hosannas proclaim their adoration, saying: "Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty: just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest."-Rev. 15:3, 4.

The lecturer concluded by saying, that the signs of the times seem to indicate the rapid approach of that great crisis in human affairs long foretold in Scripture, when three great champions were about to enter the lists and strive for the government and dominion of the world. These were Despotism, Democracy, and Omnipotence. The struggle between the first two would be fearful but brief-Democracy would be forced to succumb to the power of standing armies, to the force of organization which would be hurled against it; that Despotism, proud of its conquest, would fondly indulge its dream of universal sovereignty.

Its delusion will be brief, and its catastrophe overwhelming, for it is not for mortal man to grasp the sceptre of universal dominion. That is an inheritance that God has reserved for his King at his right hand in the heavens. Hence it is written, "All kings shall bow down before him-all nations shall serve him-His name shall endure for ever, and men shall be blessed in him-all nations shall call him blessed," for he is King of kings and Lord of lords-Governor of the nations upon earth, and "Prince of the kings of the earth.-Ps. 72.; Rev. 1:5.

Israel dwelling confidently

How might "peace and safety" come about?

A peaceful negotiation with Hamas signed in the spirit of brotherly friendship, or another military confrontation that the Jews win on the basis of Psalm 83.

If Psalm 83 is an indicator it would suggest perhaps the latter, triggered by some dramatic event; we don't know what it might be. [in 2007]

I don't know if that's what's going to happen, but it is a possibility that there will be an Israeli reprisal after the manner of David and Solomon and Jehoshaphat, Uzziah and Hezekiah of old, aroused to opposing forces and that Israel might take control of the West Bank absolutely which biblically she must control at the time of the end, and put a ring of steel around Gaza, to contain the spirit of hatred that broods and festers in that place.

I believe that if Israel does that at some stage in the future, she will have set the scene for the invasion of Gog who is the latter day Assyro-Babylonian.

Notes from a study by Bro Roger Lewis, 2007

Perhaps we have witnessed the trigger [the Hamas massacres and attrocities of Oct 7, 2023].

Bro Roger gave this study in 2007. His Bible based expectations appear to be sound exposition of the word.

13 Sheba [gulf states] , and Dedan [Saudi Arabia], and the merchants of Tarshish [Britain], with all the young lions [nations formerly part of British Empire] thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

These inquiries are equivalent to a declaration from the protecting power, that such a spoliation would not be permitted.

...Gog does not go forth with the consent of the power under the shadow of whose wings the Tenth in the midst of the land has flourished in security and comfort. It sends forth its forces to meet the invader, who

"goes forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many:"

Eureka 16 part iv (11.4.0.)

In speaking of the destruction of Nineveh the throne of the Assyrian power, which was represented by a winged lion, that city is styled

"the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion (or king) walked, and the lion's whelp (or heir to the throne) and none made them afraid. The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses (by his wars) and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin."

The use of the phrase "young lions" is also illustrated by the prophet Ezekiel in the nineteenth chapter. In lamenting the then coming indignation of Yahweh upon the princes of Israel, he styles Jerusalem, the metropolis of Judah's state, their "mother," and "lioness."-Jerusalem the throne of Judah's Lion, as Nineveh was of the Assyrian.

"She lay down," saith he, "among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions. And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey, it devoured men. The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains into the land of Egypt."

This was Jehoahaz, whom Pharoah Necho dethroned, and carried a prisoner to Egypt, where he died.

"Now when she (Jerusalem) saw that she had waited, and that her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion."

This was Jehoiakim and after him Jehoiachin, successors to Jehoahaz.

"And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, devouring men. And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities, and the land was desolate and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring. Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces (of the Chaldo-Assyrian empire) and spread their net over him; and he was taken in their pit. And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel"

From this use of the phrase "young lions" it will be seen, that the inhabitants of Jerusalem or the citizens of Judah, in general, are not regarded as lions young or old, although a lion is the symbol of the state. A lion represents the power, not the people. The generality are "whelps" without power; so that "a young lion" is a whelp made such by exaltation to power.

The eagle-winged lion of Nineveh, the plucked lion of Babylon, the lion of Judah, and the lion of Sheba, Dedan, and Tarshish, all come under the same rule. They represent powers, whose subjects become lions when promoted to the administration of affairs. In accordance, therefore, with prophetic heraldry, the politicals through whom the lion-power ruling over Sheba Dedan, and Tarshish contemporary with Gog, in the latter days, finds expression, are termed

"all the young lions thereof."

A great political and commercial power, then, connected with Tarshish, exists now, as well as in the days of Solomon and Hiram. Its merchants are also rapidly becoming as celebrated for abundance of gold as the ancient Ophir. A time is to come when gold and silver and iron, shall be as plentiful in Jerusalem as in Solomon's time, and even more so.

"For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron."

Thus saith Yahweh; and it is remarkable that Tarshish in ancient and modern times, and contemporary with Israel's glory, should be the country of supply.

The navy of Tarshish is now as celebrated as were its ships in the day when the Chaldo-Assyrian laid waste its strength in ruining Tyre. The Russo-Assyrian is becoming formidable, and threatening to its prosperity on the same waters as bore its fleets of old. The Mediterranean is the Sea of Tarshish, and as much entitled to the name now as ever before.

Possessed of Aden, Malta, the Ionian Isles and Gibraltar, that sea is in effect a British Lake. Tarshish is evidently then a power of the latter days, and synonymous with the Anglo-Indian-a power which is destined to encounter the Assyrian, and with him to lose its strength, preparatory to its mariners being placed at the disposal of the Son of David, Solomon's superior, and David's Lord.

When the autocratic Gog is in possession of Jerusalem, much of Palestine, and all of Egypt, the now existent lion power of Sheba and Tarshish will hold the more southern and eastern countries of Edom, Moab, and Ammon, the latter two lying east of the Dead Sea, and the river Arnon.

This will be the relative position of the Gog-power, and its antagonist the Tarshish-power, in the Holy Land in that crisis of the Latter Days indicated to Nebuchadnezzar in his dream, when he saw the Stone-power

"smite the image on its Feet of Iron and Clay, and break them to pieces."

Now as the image is representative of one confederated imperial dominion under an Assyrian Head though made up of many parts, it is clear that the antagonist power cannot be included therein.

"Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon shall escape out of his hand;"

that is, shall not become subject to the Autocrat, or Gog, the king of the north, who rules autocratically. To these must be added Sheba, Dedan, and Tarshish, which are represented as hostile to Gog by Ezekiel. Hence the Lion-power ruling over Edom, Moab, Ammon, Sheba, Dedan, Tarshish, will be exempt from subjection to the Assyrian Head of the Image empire now rising into view.

Having identified the British power with the lion-power of Tarshish, it follows that it will be the great antagonist to the invader of the Holy Land, and captor of Jerusalem, when

"Yahweh shall gather all nations against that city to battle"

under him. Britain and Ireland are then not a toe of the feet, but outlying the image domain. It is a distinct power raised up of God to subserve the purposes of "the greater than Solomon," when the time shall arrive for Him to ascend the throne of his father David, and as the branch, to build the temple of Yahweh.

Hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey?

The struggle between Europe and Russia must inevitably break forth before long...Russia, however, and not "revolutionized Europe" will eventually be the gainer; and the Austrian and Papal territories will be in the end incorporated in the Autocrat's dominion. This will be substituting a greater despotism for a less. But events are onward. Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Sardinia, Naples, and Greece, or Revolutionary Europe, will not escape. The tide will begin to ebb, and victory perch upon the standards of the north.

The destroyer will fall upon them as the haters and desolators of the Austro-Papacy which hitherto he could not sustain in life; and the imperial sceptre of the Tzar will at length rule their destinies as the vassal kingdoms of his still increasing sovereignty. He will be a King of kings, and a Lord of lords; for they shall

"surrender their dominion to him until the words of God be fulfilled."

God's spirit being quieted for a brief space in the west, the indomitable British carry on the war in the east, where they and Russia meet in mortal fray; the latter urged by lust of universal empire, the former in defence of the Jews, then a colony in Palestine, and their own possessions in Hindostan.

The Assyrian imperialists will over-run Turkey, Egypt, and a great part of Palestine, and plant their standards on the mountains of Israel and in the Holy City. Persia will also acknowledge the supremacy of the Tzar; and the Lybians and Khushishtanees "will be at his steps."

Instead of Despotism being driven from Europe, its "New Ideas" and Fierce Democracy will be suppressed; and Despotism will be again triumphant in the Old World, and prepared to contend in battle with God himself.

In the progress of these events the political seers, peace prophets, and republican-gospellers will be confounded. Socialism will be in despair, and Britain and the New World the only refuge for the oppressed. The "New Ideas" of the nations are disorganizing and anarchical, and not regenerating. The well-being of mankind for a thousand years to come demands their suppression; and the Prince of Rosh, or Russia, is the man to do it.

When he has accomplished his work, he will himself be broken to pieces by the Prince of Israel; who will return to the Holy City and crush the Tzar's dominion by a single blow, from which he will never recover.

The words of God being now fulfilled, his late vassal kingdoms will assert their independence, and "gather their armies together to battle to make war" upon Israel's Prince. This will be the last war period for 1000 years.

The nations will be subdued, and their kingdoms transferred to the Conqueror and his companions. He will have conquered peace and hushed the alarms of war. The "new ideas" of a world lying under the wicked one will then be accounted "vanity;" and divine knowledge will

"cover the earth as the waters cover the sea."

15 And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:

North of Babylon where Ezekiel was in captivity

...Edom, Moab and the chief of Ammon, which escape the storm. The headquarters of this storm cloud invasion from the north are between the Sea of Sodom and the Jordan on the east side, and the Mediterranean on the west; and surrounding Jerusalem; as indicated in Dan. 11:45, to wit,

"he shall pitch the tents of his entrenched camp between the seas in the mountain of the glory of the Holy".

...In other words, he shall besiege Jerusalem; and to do this, he must occupy the Valley of Jehoshaphat, a narrow glen which runs from north to south, between the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and Mount Moriah, and through which flows the Kidron. Of this valley, it is said in Joel 3:2,12,

"Yahweh will gather all the nations (that is, the forces of the nations) into the Valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there".
